22 May :A mountaineering team of Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), Ministry of Defence located at Uttarkashi successfully scaled Mt Everest on May 21, 2009. The team was led by Col NM Masur. The other members of team were Sub Satal Singh, Nb Sub. SS Bodh, Nb Sub Paratap Singh, Nb Sub Dinesh Singh, Shri Kushal Singh, Shri Kushal Singh, Shri Dashrath Singh, Shri Loveraj Dharamshaktu, Shri Vishveshwar Semwal, Shri Vinod Gusain and Ms Kavita Burathoki.This is for the first time a NIM expedition scaled the Everest as an independent expedition. This is a remarkable achievement in the history of NIM, which has nurtured great mountaineers who have made history by climbing several difficult and challenging peaks, including Everest, but never launched any expedition of its own to this highest mountain of the world.
NIM , which stands today as India’s and Asia’s premier Mountaineering Institute and one of the finest of its kind in the world, was established at Uttarkashi on November 14, 1965.
