9 June :CMS is a premier research and advocacy organization working on various developmental aspects with specialization in communication and media. It has several path breaking studies to its credit and environment is a priority concern. Our field research has repeatedly brought out that even in today’s information surfeit world; awareness levels on environmental issues are still abysmally low.
CMS Environment has been conducting environmental awareness activities for organisations, schools and colleges students all across the nation.CMS Environment today organized Eco Tour to the Heritage Pond in Sector 26, Chandigarh for the HSBC employees as a part of week long activities in Chandigarh to celebrate the World Environment Day. The said pond is about 225 years old and it situated in the revenue limits of village Hamirgarh Kanchan Majra before this city of Chandigarh came into being. This heritage pond surrounded by thick vegetation comprising about 650 trees including 15 heritage trees and numerous other varieties of plants which serves as habitat of 83 species of living beings including the migratory birds which visit this wet land during winters. The place is important not only from ecological point of view but is of enormous educational importance and the students have been visiting this place.
Dr. Gaurav Chabra from NGO Humlog and Mr. S. K. Sharma from Environment Society of India interacted with the HSBC employees and gave knowledge about the history and importance of Heritage Pond in Sector 26, Chandigarh. The queries of the employees who attended the session about Biodiversity present at Heritage Pond and its role of attracting the migratory birds were answered. Dr. Gaurav Chabra. Both Dr. Chabra and Mr. Sharma are actively involved in preserving and highlighting the Heritage Pond as Biodiversity Spot and lamented that this place should be used for Eco-tourism also. They advocated the need to preserve and multiple such kind of green oasis in the urban areas.
