4 June : To mark the World Environment Day, June 5 the Environment Society of India (ESI) today launched a campaign “Paint your roof white” at the Sanatan Dharam Temple, Sector 11, Chandigarh to help reduce Global Warming by both conserving energy and reflecting sunlight back into space. 15 students of the ICFAI Institute of Science & Technology, Hydrabad led by Prof. Deepak Kumar Syal, Dean ICFAI Tech Chandigarh and 15 students of the Chitkara Institute of Mass Communication led by Mr. Swaraj Chauhan joined in painting the roof white with two coats.
ESI President S K Sharma hoped that all the citizens would do the same and their step would lower the cost of air conditioning making buildings more comfortable and eradicate the urban heat island effect due to the concentration of concrete surfaces in the urban area t.
Prof. R K Kohli, Chairman, Department of Botany, Panjab University said that be hoped that the movement will spread across the country.
Mr. B K Malhotra, Secretary of the temple committee said we have set up a sacred plants grove and now are replacing the Flourescent tubes with CFL Bulbs in the temple building. A vemi compost pit for the disposal of flower waste , a rain water harvesting structure and a lotus pond will be created sothat the message of nature conservation spread among the devotees .
