Shilpa Rao started her Bollywood career from the song “Tosey Naina Lagey” from the 2007 film ‘Anwar’. Hindustan Times in 2009 described Shilpa Rao as one of the most prominent singers in the “wave” of “young, little-known singers” sweeping through Bollywood. Playback singer Hariharan arranged for Rao to study under his music teacher, Ghulam Mustafa Khan. She started her career singing advertising jingles and then went on to movies.
Shilpa won the Best Female Playback Singer at the Star Screen Awards, 2008 for the song “Khuda Jaane” from the movie Bachna Ae Haseeno. The song was also adjudged the Song of the Year. In 2009 she sang in “Mudi Mudi” for the movie Paa. In 2010 she sang in “Nain Parindey” for the movie Lafangey Parindey, and in the title song for the movie Anjaana Anjaani.
