Born in a aesthetic disciplined family, Dr Samira Koser is an accomplished dancer who had a sense of dance since childhood and she participated in various dance competitions during her school and college education winning accolades everywhere.
She received her initial training into the essentials of this classical dance from Late Guru Kanhiya Lal, the doyen of the Jaipur gharana and further underwent training from Kathak wizard Guru Shobha Koser. Presently, she is honing her skill under Guru Brij Mohan Gangani.
Holding Post-graduate degrees in Dance and Psychology, Samira Koser has imparted training in dance to a number of students while working as the Guest faculty at Government Home Science College, Chandigarh. She has also done Ph.D. in psychology pertaining to dance apart from teaching as dance lecturer at Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh
Her innate plasticity of limbs and artistry helped Samira blossom into a fine exponent of her chosen craft. In addition to the ‘nritta’ items that are the hallmark of Kathak, she is equally proficient in ‘abhinaya’, balancing the fluid movement of her feet with the unmatched eloquence of her eyes and ‘murdras’. With her entrancing stage presence, confident demeanour, clean chakkars, clarity of footwork and effervescent joy in the dance, Samira is most certainly a Kathak danseuse to watch.
Her greatest asset is her sparking eyes that enabled her to convey a host of emotions. Samira Koser is not merely a traditional dancer but believes in the creation of new choreographies suiting the demands of the age without distorting the true spirit and form of the traditional arts. She has also directed many ballets and conducted workshops on various themes including mythological, devotional and historical.
She has given several successful performances throughout the country and abroad including Russia. Indian People Theatre Association (IPTA) conference, Hyderabad, Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh, Education Department, Chandigarh Administration, Dushehra Festival, Arki (Solan) and National Dance Festival organised by the Government of India, also witnessed her spell-bound Kathak recitals.
The Indian classical dance field has found in her a versatile artiste of a subtle understanding.
