Chandigarh, March 29; Today, a week long ‘Jungle Trail’, programme for the students,concluded with 50 students of Government High school, Sector-11, Chandigarh visiting Nepli in Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary. The awareness generation nature trail programme was commenced on the auspicious occasion of the “World Water Day” i.e. 22nd March, 2012. The excursion for students of the Government School of the city was organized by Forest & Wildlife Department, Chandigarh Administration in collaboration with Yuvsatta -An NGO and Education Department, Chandigarh.
Conservator of Forests & Chief Wildlife Warden Santosh Kumar, informed that school students through such excursion trips to forest area will inculcate rich knowledge about the floral and faunal wealth of the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary and their importance in the ecosystem. He further asserted that such awareness generation programmes will be organised more frequently in future to sensitize the young generation for protection and conservation of the nature and natural resources..
During the week long Jungle Trail programme, a total of 500 students of eight government school participated. During the visit the forest and wildlife department staff provided valuable information to the students regarding types of vegetation (Trees, Shrubs, and Herbs) especially of medicinal importance found in the forest area. Students during the trekking to forest area witnessed a large variety of the terrestrial and Avi fauna like – Sambhar, Chital, Rabbit, Pangolin,Peacock,Red Jungle Fowl, water birds etc.
