As part of the ongoing “Traffic Rules Awareness Week” being celebrated in University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh from 6th and 10th February 2012, a Special Lecture on “Traffic Rules Awareness”, was organized. The Chief Guest of the day was Mr. Alok Kumar (IPS), DIG Traffic Police, Chandigarh.
While addressing the students on the occasion, Mr. Alok Kumar informed all present that with every passing year “the number of road accidents in India is escalating.” He further added that “India houses almost 10% of the road accidents in the world, in which each year, precious lives are lost” and that “as educated, responsible citizens, we all must rise to the occasion and abide traffic rules diligently.”
Following Mr. Kumar’s address, Mr. Vinod Kumar, Head Constable, Traffic Police, through his brief presentation, highlighted some of the common traffic rules violations and urged the students “to follow rules for their own safety and the safety of all others on the road.”
The function opened with an address by Prof. Sangita Bhalla, Director, UILS, PU, Chandigarh, who welcomed the Chief Guest and lauded the efforts of the faculty members and students in organizing such “a meaningful and relevant talk.”
The day concluded with an On-the-Spot Inter-Department Essay Writing Competition, in which as many as 75 students of the various departments of the university participated. The winners of this contest would be awarded prizes on the Valedictory Function of the week to be held on 10th Febrauary 2012.
The faculty and students of UILS would also be participating in a rally to be held in the PU Campus on 9th February 2012, through which they will spread the message of traffic rules awareness, amongst the students of Panjab University.
The entire function was co-ordinated by Dr. Gulshan Kumar, Assistant Professor in Economics, UILS, PU.
