“In 2013, cable and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband deployments will slow, while hybrid fiber-to-the-node (FTTN) and vectored VDSL-to-the-home deployments will accelerate. The tidal wave of FTTN and vectored VDSL rollouts, which began late in 2012 with AT&T’s $14 billion capital investment and similar investments in Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands, and the UK, will grow and maintain DSL’s leading position in access technology worldwide. By the end of 2013, FTTN and vectored VDSL services will clearly lead the world in broadband access growth, and their lead will increase throughout this decade. In addition, Wi-Fi use for cellular carrier offload will double as mobile devices continue to overload cellular networks. The average number of mobile and machine-to-machine devices in the home will double, as will the over-the-top (OTT) video content consumed. This combination will significantly stress Wi-Fi networks, leading service providers, equipment providers, application vendors, and consumers to focus on improving the performance of residential Wi-Fi networks.”
