Ludhiana : Semester system is an innovative method to improve the quality of education but it should not be implemented in isolation without choice based credit system and Autonomy to the Colleges and University Departments. There is a need to introduce flexibility in the semester system with the focus on cost effectiveness so that conducting twice examination on twice and thrice system should not put financial burden on the students and parents.
These were the views presented by the post graduate departments of the SCD Government College Ludhiana during the seminar organised by the Post Graduate Department of Commerce and Business Innovations which was presided by the Principal Dr. Dharam Singh Sandhu. While speaking on the occassion Principal Dr. Dharam Singh Sandhu said that Quality of Education can be improved when we listen to the students regarding the problems faced by them in the present system. He said that students and teachers are the two important organs of our education system which need to dialogue regarding the various issues and such seminar regarding the effective implementation of semester system can play a key role in improve the system.
Ms Ritasha Dua a student of M.A-II (Economics) while presenting his views said that semester system is a positive change in the process of learnign as it reduces the dropout rate in higher education and helps to clear the backlog. He said with the introduction of the semester system the class room interaction has improved and which leads to improvement in the participation of the students in the subject related issues . Ms Harpreet Kaur a student of M.A-I (Economics) expressed apprehensions about the success of semester system and questioned the validity of semester system in the overall personality development. She said that semester system has hindered the students growth in extra-curricular sector and defraying the students from the societal issues. She said students are forced to bear the unwanted syllabi and burdened with more examination. Mr Aadil Manzoor who belong to Jammu and Kashmir and studying in M.Com (Business Innovations) said that semester system is not helpful for the students having lesser I.Q and need to be reformed with innovative techniques which can develop their I.Q level .
Ms Muskan Sharma advocated the semester system by saying that semester system need to be improved with more participation of the students in the seminars/Conferences and research orientation. Ms Jasmeet kaur of M.Com (Business Innovations)-II expressed dissatisfaction over the assignments given by the teachers and asked the university to improve the participation of the students which can give them flexibility in their studies. While speaking on the occassion Dr. Ashwani Bhalla , Professor and Programme Coordinator in the Department of Commerce and Business Innovations said that Semester system has not been implemented in true spirit of the University Grants Commission and Ministry of HRD. He said semester system must have been implemented in composite form with Choice based credit system and Autonomy of the Colleges in terms of their syllabus formation and Examination system.
The move to introduce the semester system should have been supported by the efforts by the university to deliberate and resolve on the implementation of the semester system after observing the difficulties faced in it. There is also a dire need to re-confugure and revise the curriculam(While the quantum of instruction work of the faculty members remains about the same, the numbers of papers and credits would be twice as many) . Sh. R.K. Miglani , Vice Principal of the College said that every system has good or bad points but it is the urge and desire of the authority with which they implement the system and make it successful. Mrs poonam Mittal Head of the Economics Department who presided over the function said that the students feedback must be the part of curriculum and authorities must address the students issues to make the semester system successful in the colleges.
In the End judged for their efficient debating skills and they were awarded prizes as follows: Best debator and 1st Prize – Ms Muskan Sharma (M.Com (Business Innovations-1) , 2nd Prize Nitasha Dua (M.A (Economics)-II, 3rd Prize (Brackted) – Ms Jasmeet Kaur (M.Com-Business Innovations-IIIrd Semester) and Lovejeet Kaur (M.Com (1st Semester) . On this occassion a Quiz Contest Braino-Fest was also organised and the prize winners were : Team of M.A-1 Economics First , M.Com-II -2nd and M.Com (General) 3rd. In the end Dr. Dharm Singh Sandhu Principal of the College distributed the certificates and prizes to the winners and congratulated them.
