Chandigarh October 29, 2016 : Chandigarh October 29, 2016. Sh. Satya Pal Jain, Ex City MP, Additional Solicitor General of India and a Member of the Law Commission of India has expressed his gratitude to Sh. Hamid Ansari, Vice-President of India & Chancellor Panjab University Chandigarh and Prof. Arun Grover, the Vice Chancellor of the University for re-nominating him as a member of the Panjab University Senate. This will be his 10th term on the Panjab University Senate.
Interestingly, in 1975, when Emergency was declared in India, Mr. Jain was denied admission in the Department of Law by the University inspite of his name being in the merit list and he was detained in Burail Jail for about 1 year.
Later during emergency itself, Sh. Jain was elected to the Panjab University Senate for the first time in 1976 from the Graduates Constituency at the young age of 24. He was re-elected from the same constituency in 1980, 1984 and 1988. After that, he was nominated as a member of the Senate by the last 3 Vice Presidents of India, Sarvshri K. R. Narayanan, Sh. Krishan Kant, Sh. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and now by Sh. Hamid Ansari, continuously and in a row in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012 and now in 2016.
Interestingly, Sh. Jain who entered the house as the youngest Member in the Senate in 1976 and a person who was denied even admission to the Law Department in 1975, has today become, from the tenure point of view, the Senior Most Member of the House, being the only member out of the entire present house, having a 10th term to his credit.
A large member of people, including party workers, today visited Sh. Jain’s residence to congratulate him on his re-nomination to the Panjab University Senate.
