Department of Zoology and Environmental Sciences in collaboration with Deptt of NSS, Punjabi University, Patiala organized Environment Awareness Rally and one day workshop to celebrate “World Environment Day -2018” on 07-06-2018 funded by Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Sector-26, Chandigarh. Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) B.S. Ghuman along with Prof. (Dr.) G. S. Batra, Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. (Dr.) Jaspal Kaur, Dean Resaerch, Prof. (Dr.) M.S. Nijjar, Registrar, Punjabi University, Patiala flagged off the Environment Awareness Rally in the University Campus. After the rally a workshop on the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution” was organized in the senate hall, (Dr.) B.S. Ghuman, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala inaugurated the workshop. He was Chief Guest on this occasion. In his inaugural address, he focused on “Beat Plastic Pollution”, the theme for World Environment 2018, urges governments, industry, communities and individuals to come together and explore sustainable alternatives and urgently reduce the production and excessive use of single-use plastic polluting our rivers, wetlands, streams and oceans, damaging the life in them and threatening human health. He suggested phasing out polythene bags from the university campus. He motivated the students to plant trees. Prof. (Dr.) Jagbir Singh an eminent envirnmentalist delivered his lecture on the topic “Beat Plastic Pollution”. He said that every year the world uses 500 billion plastic bags. Each year, at least 8 million tonnes of plastic end up in the oceans, the equivalent of a full garbage truck every minute and that is being used by the marine life. In the last decade, we produced more plastic than in the whole last century. 50 per cent of the plastic we use is single-use or disposable. We buy 1 million plastic bottles every minute. Plastic makes up 10% of all of the waste we generate. Dr. Onkar Singh Brraich, Organising Secretary of the workshop said that plastic pollution is big menace of present times. India has not learned any lesson from the plastic pollution and continuously discharging into the natural resources, if this practice will not be stopped, then the day is not far away when we will lose our pristine ecosystems. Prof. (Dr.) Paramvir Singh, Head, Deptt. of NSS, Punjabi University, Patiala proposed vote of thanks. About 120 participants took part in this workshop including Faculty members, Research Scholars and Students.
