Chandigarh: Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) may become the second institute in Chandigarh to offer MBBS course very soon. The chances of starting MBBS course in PGI became bright with the intervention of Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Mr. Jagat Prakash Nadda.
On the request of Member of Parliament Smt. Kirron Kher, Mr. Nadda has directed PGIMER, Chandigarh to place the proposal of introduction of MBBS course in the institute before their Standing Academic Committee, Standing Finance Committee and Governing Body for taking a decision. This proposal will now first be placed in the Standing Academic Committee which will be held very soon.
Smt. Kirron Kher had sent a letter to the then Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Mr. Harshwardhan along with the representation received from citizens of Chandigarh regarding introduction of MBBS Course PGIMER, Chandigarh. Later she pursued this demand with Mr.Nadda and strongly recommended that the course should start in PGIMER. She said that the demand raised by the citizens seems to be very genuine and she feels that the doctors trained in such an institute of repute will bring the health services of the area at a new height.
In their representation residents have pleaded that PGIMER, Chandigarh is already running a number of under Graduate and Post Graduate Courses, except MBBS. So, with the Introduction of MBBS Course in the PGIMER will prove to be boon for the aspiring doctors in tri-City i.e. Chandigarh, Panchkula & Mohali. The residents have been demanding the course at PGIMER for many years.
So far, only Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32 (GMCH-32) offers the MBBS course in the city. If the PGIMER Standing Academic Committee approves the proposal for an MBBS course, it will be forwarded to the Standing Finance Committee and a final decision will be taken by the Institute’s Governing Body which is likely to be chaired by Union Health Minister Mr. Jagat Prakash Nadda. Many academicians at the Institute are of the opinion that they should start the MBBS course at the institute so that they are able to generate a good pool of talent.
