26 Oct : Last month saw some unfortunate incidents that involved the dignity of teachers of two departments in particular. Due to differences on starting LL.M by correspondence, Chairman of the Department of Laws Prof P.S. Jaswal had to tender his resignation under protest. Our stance is very clear: we do not discount the role of administrators, but teachers should not be pressurized to start or run courses which, they feel, would put them under undue duress. Following a resolution by the teachers of the Department of Laws in which they requested the Vice Chancellor not to accept the resignation of Prof. Jaswal, the situation was taken care of well in time. We also appreciate the initiative of the Vice Chancellor in persuading Prof. Jaswal to continue as Chairman of the Department. In another incident a student leader shouted at Prof. Jagjit Singh, Chairman of School of Punjabi Studies. In his complaint, Prof. Singh has narrated the details of the verbal assault that he was subjected to on a demand that was well beyond his jurisdiction. PUTA believes in the harmony of relations among all wings of University – students, teachers, administrators, and other staff, but the onus of such a harmony lies on everyone.
