By Ankur Vadhera : Noble Peace Prize Laureate (2014) and Children Rights Activist Sh Kailash Satyarthi and Fields Medal winner (2014) and noted Mathematician Prof Manjul Bhargava would receive Panjab University (PU) Honorary Degree from the President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee. President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee is due to visit PU on March 14 this year for delivering Convocation address at the PU Annual Convocation. Medals, Prizes and Degrees to the PU students passing examinations in 2014 would be awarded at the Convocation.
In their communication sent to PU Vice Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover, the two leading personalities have confirmed their participation at the 64th Annual Convocation of PU on March 14. Fields Medal is considered the most respected honour in the field of Mathematics and is also known as the “Nobel Prize of Mathematics”. Sh Kailash Satyarthi and Prof Manjul Bhargava would receive Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) and Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) respectively. PU Spokesman informed that the University administration has already started preparation for the PU Convocation and it would be third Convocation address by Shri Mukherjee at the PU. Shri Pranab Mukherjee would be the fifth President of India, who would be delivering the Convocation address at the PU. Earlier, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, Giani Zail Singh, Shri Neelam Sanjiva Reddy and Dr Rajinder Prasad had delivered Convocation address in 2007, 1985, 1981 and 1951 respectively, he added.
