CHANDIGARH, March 23, 2008: In response to call given by Professor R.C.Sobti, Vice-Chancellor Panjab University, a large number of gathering including Mr. Pradeep Chhabra Mayor, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh,coucillors including Ms. Anu Chatrath, Ms. Sheela, University fraternity planted saplings, took out a march to salute the martyrs at the Panjab University Campuses in Sectors 14 and 25 here today.
The Vice-Chancellor had issued an appeal asking every one to come forward and take part in the third phase of tree plantation drive to save the city from environment degradation. About three hundred saplings of Neem,Ashoka and other plants were planted by the gathering. The Vice-Chancellor made an appeal to campus residents to plant at least two saplings each in their respective homes, and other present to ensure that they would do the same in or around their respective habitats, write the name of the plant and nurture the same.
The Vice-Chancellor announced that by March 31st, 2008 the University will have one thousand saplings planted. The University will be a frontrunner in strengthening the Environment.Recalling the supreme sacrifices made by Shaheed Bhagat Singh and other martyrs the Vice-Chancellor asked everyone present to have a round of the campus on foot, and to take steps to keep the campus clean and free from polythene and smoke and develop a sense of respect for fellow beings as a tribute to them.
The Vice-Chancellor on behalf of PUCSC presented T-shirts to students and other participants. Amongst others who were present included Registrar, eans, employees and their families, leaders of various students unions and some senior residents.
