The India Post, Chnadigarh,July 16, 2008:Shri Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Chief Minister, Haryana laid the foundation stone of University Institute of Applied Management Sciences (UIAMS) in the South Campus of Panjab University here today. Shri Randeep Singh Surjewala, Hon’ble Minister for Power, Water Supply, Sanitation & Parliamentary Affairs, Haryana also graced the occasion. They also provided fillip to the on-going plantation movement in the University and planted saplings.
The Chief Minister announced a grant of Rs.21 lakhs and assured support for University’s future development plans. In response to a question he promised to support University’s claim for Central Status.
Referring to the rich heritage and contribution of P.U., Shri Hooda told that he and
Shri Randeep S. Surjewala were proud of their association with Panjab University and complimented the University authorities for creating additional seats for single girl child, for cancer and AIDS patients and other welfare steps. He also praised Prof. Sobti for his far-sightedness for starting market friendly courses. Panjab University has played a very
pivotal role for the development of education, he added. The Chief Minister shared the steps taken by his Govt., especially for weaker sections of the society, which had triggered socio-economic revolution in Haryana including reservation of seats and scholarships in teaching institutions of Haryana. Empowerment of the weaker sections
results in empowerment of the nation, contributes to the national development and further helps in fulfilling the dreams of our forefathers, he added.
Haryana would open world class Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology at Kuli near Delhi in the month of December this year. The allocations of funds for education have been increased to 3900 crores from 1600 crores, he informed. In addition Haryana was involving private sector investment in the field of higher education. A Business School has already been started at Hissar. Central University for Haryana will be set up at Mohindergarh, the Chief Minister said.
Prof. R.C. Sobti, Vice-Chancellor in his welcome address shared amidst cheers that the Haryana Chief Minister had laid the foundation stone of UIAMS building on the auspicious day of Guru Purnima. UIAMS is a mission to provide quality education to the youth of the region and to promote value based education which has been the dream of our forefathers. The University is endeavouring to groom socially responsible citizens from the State of Punjab & Haryana who contribute to the overall development of the nation. The education provided in UIAMS would be at par with IIMS.
The Vice-Chancellor informed that Panjab University has undertaken counseling of the rural students to empower them. He also told the steps which the University had taken in making the Campus free from smoke, pollution and polythene as well as environment friendly.
Panjab University has planted around 3000 neem saplings during last ten days or so and this movement will continue for many days.
Prof. A.K. Saihjpal said that U.I.A.M.S. to its birth with a mission to offer management programmes in sectoral areas and streams to fulfil industry needs and requirements for specialized managerial skills. It is in furtherance of Panjab University’s vision of developing emerging management education and research areas, as a nodal Institute of Excellence in Applied management fields. Prof Saihjpal informed that the University Institute of Applied Management Sciences is established as per patterns and standards of Indian Institute of Managements in the country. All the MBA programmes are in the sunrise industries, with a flavour of complete application oriented, industry and
market-driven education, which will provide the better placement opportunities to potential Learners. UIAMS has been established to match and implement Higher Educational Policy of our Prime Minister Prof. Manmohan Singh.
It is first department which has introduced a special financial package to SC/ST students on experimental basis. A concession of Rs.75000/- in tuition fee to SC/ST students has been given with an understanding that the whole money will be reimbursed by social welfare departments of the concerned states, he added.
