Chandigarh : PU Book Fair started at the Panjab University (PU) Campus today. More than forty
reputed national and international Publishers and Distributors are participating in the
PU Book Fair, which received huge participation from the students, research fellows and
Staff Members.
PU Dean University Instructions (DUI), Prof AK Bhandari inaugurated the five days PU
Book Fair with release of pigeons and tricolor balloons. He said that the Book Fair
would be very beneficial for the students and faculty and should be an annual event in PU.
Later, PU Vice Chancellor Prof. Arun K. Grover visited the fair, as he could not do
visit earlier due to his business, and congratulated the Librarian Dr. Raj Kumar and the
exhibitors. He appreciated that the Book Fair was very well organized and wished it
great success so that it can be made an annual feature. A special grant has been
released to all the departments for purchase of books from the Book Fair.
PU’s AC Joshi Library is organizing the PU Book Fair for the first time in PU. More
than 2000 students etc. visited the PU Book Fair on day one. Faculty, Students &
Research Scholars of PU Departments, Chandigarh colleges & institutes, 180 affiliated
colleges of PU and neighbouring states can visit the PU Book Fair, which would conclude
on August 29.
During the inaugural function Deputy Librarian A C Joshi Library, Ms. Navjeet Kaur gave
a brief introduction of the journey of the Library over the last 50 years. Dr H R
Chopra, former Chairman, Dept. of Library and Information Science, Panjab University,
gave a brief talk on importance of Book Fair in present times. Former Librarian AIIMS,
New Delhi Dr. R P Kumar dwelled upon the ongoing debate of print vs. e-books. Dr. Rashmi
Yadav, Deputy Librarian proposed the vote of thanks followed by high Tea for all the
guests. More than 300 guests participated in the function. More than 300 guests

Dr. J S Thakur, Additional Professor, School of Public Health, PGI, Chandigarh
delivered a talk on “Epidemic of Lifestyle Diseases: how we can prevent it”, at the
seminar hall at the venue of Book Fair. He discussed the life style diseases such as
stress, obesity, cancer, hypertension, Diabetes etc. which are mainly due to consumption
of junk food, tobacco and sedentary life style. He stressed upon having at least 5
servings of fruit and vegetables everyday and physical activity of 30-40 minutes every
day like walking, cycling etc.
Later Dr. Jitendra Mohan, Prof. Emeritus, Dept. of Psychology, Panjab University
addressed the audience on the latest concept of Emotional Intelligence in afternoon,
that is based on emotions, patience, balanced values, peace etc. Self awareness,
empathy, anger management, optimism need to be developed for emotional intelligence.
Blood donation van of PGI was stationed at the venue to encourage voluntary blood donation.
