On the second day of the ongoing fest, “Arguendo”, the 1st UILS Academic National Law Fest, the level of competition escalated further as the students had to compete for the final round of the National Debate, Essay Writing and Ad Mad Show. Fierce competition was witnessed amongst participants to qualify for a place in the finals and the semi-final rounds of Trial Advocacy and Client Counseling Competition.
The teams which advanced to the final round of the National Debate Competition were Aradhika and Shubhra & Roshni and Nikhilesh. The topic of the finals for the debate was “Technology of today is fit to replace all sources of learning” and the rounds were judged by Prof. Anil Raina, Dr. Veena Verma and Ms. Jaspreet Wasu. Out of the participants, special praise was showered upon Aradhika by Prof. Anil Raina for her exceptional oratory skills making her and her teammate Shubhra frontrunners for winning the National Debate Competition.
The Essay Writing Competition saw 25 participants representing more than 8 colleges from all over the country. The topics given to the participants were- “Newspapers are a thing of the past” or “The need of the hour is classroom education not classroom teaching”. They were ajudged by Dr. Harneet Sandhu and Ms. Apoorva Goel, the latter being an alumnus of UILS. The results saw Amaninder Kaur taking the first position and Mankiran Singh and Gurpreet were declared the Runner-up and second Runner-up respectively.
The Semi-finals of the Client Counseling Competition saw the teams of Madhvi Sandhu and Subha Khanna from Army Institute of Law, Mohali and Samiksha Satish Pednekar and Mrinaal Sharma of JGLS, Sonipat advancing to the final round of the Competition. The participants had hectic deliberations on the topic of Intellectual Property Rights and Consumer Protection.
The Semi-finals of the Trial Advocacy were held today. The proposition was based on the topic of “Rape of a Transgender”. It covered various issues including problems relating to rape, sexual harassment of students and harassment of people by public servants. The participants were rigorously cross-examined by the judges.
The Ad Mad Competition was a roaring success. It saw not only the participants but also the judges and the audience enjoying themselves. Over 8 teams participated in the competition which was adjudged by RJ Pankaj, Dr. Navdeep Kaur, Mr. Arastu Chopra, Ms. Harsimran Preet and Mrs Savita Bhatti. Mrs. Bhatti gave a personal touch to the evening by sharing her own experiences with the audience and participants. She talked about how humor should be taken in good spirit and to quote – “No matter what life brings, laugh”. All the judges had nothing but encouraging words to say to the participants. The results declared saw the team consisting of Baljeet, Varun, Shvetanshu and Puneet winning the competition. While the team of Komal, Sahil, Sana and Shubhamrit were declared the runner-ups. The former team is from UILS while the later team belongs to the 3 year Law Department.
The third day will have the closing ceremony which will include the Valedictory and Prize distribution ceremony of the 1st National UILS academic Law Fest which will be held on Saturday, 28.03.2015 at 1pm in UILS, PU, Chandigarh. The ceremony will be presided over by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Rajive Bhalla, Judge, Panjab and Haryana High Court. The Guests of Honor – Hon’ble Mrs. Justice Daya Chaudhary, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Rajan Gupta, Hon’ble Mrs. Justice Lisa Gill, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Amit Rawal, Mr. K.T.S. Tulsi, Sr. Advocate and Member of Rajya Sabha, and Dr. Anmol Rattan Sidhu, Sr. Advocate and President of Punjab and Haryana Bar Association.
