Y.S. RANA , CHANDIGARH — Three programme officers, six NSS volunteers of city have been awarded State NSS awards for their outstanding contributions in NSS activities for the year 2012-13 and 2013-14 in a befitting manner at the State NSS award ceremony. Also, an NSS volunteer was given special award. The ceremony was organized by the Chandigarh NSS Cell, Education Department at PG Government College for Girls, Sector 42 here on Thursday. Awardees were given cash award, a trophy and a certificate.
Rubinderjit Singh Brar, Director, Higher Education, UT, Chandigarh was the chief guest and Subhash Chand, regional director, NSS, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, GOI, presided over the function.
The ceremony was started with lighting of the lamp followed by welcome address and cultural programme included NSS song; folk dance (Haryanvi and Himachali) and Punjabi Bhangra performed by the NSS volunteers.
While speaking on the occasion, Mr Brar lauded the role of the NSS as an instrument of selfless service to the society. Terming NSS as the most powerful tool of using youth energy to positive cause also proudly recalled the contribution. He also impressed upon to involve more youth in NSS to further strengthening the community service.
Regional Directorate Head of NSS Subhash Chand who has been working with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, GOI since 1986. Before holding the fort of regional centre head of NSS, he had served with 10 different NSS regional centres covering 22 states. He discussed about the successful activities of NSS and lauded the performance of NSS volunteers in various activities.
While welcoming the chief guest and guest of honour Bikram Rana, State Liaison Officer, NSS Cell, Chandigarh said that the aim of NSS was to develop the personality of students through community service. He proudly recalled the contribution of the State Cell while dwelling on the various activities it has been performing. Over 800 NSS volunteers and NSS programme officer from different plus two schools, colleges and university attended the NSS Day also.
The function was ended with vote of thanks.
Those who were awarded State NSS awards were: Parveen Chaubey, Dr Nemi Chand Goliaya and Ms Parminder Kaur (programme officers); Kuldeep Singh, Ms Manju, Suresh Kumar, Sumit Kumar, Puneet Virk and Rohit Kumar (all NSS volunteers). Pratik (special award).
