Mother Tongue Day was celebrated at Desh Bhagat University with full enthusiasm. A special function was arranged to celebrate the day in which students belonging to different states as well as countries participated. Inaugurating the programme, university Chancellor Dr. Zora Singh and Pro Chancellor Ms. Tejinder Kaur said that mother tongue has special importance in the life of everybody and the child learns first the mother tongue which helps him throughout his life. So everybody should take pride in it. They also urged the students to learn at least two or three extra languages.
Celebrating the mother tongue day, the students presented different items representing the language and culture of their states and countries. They exhibited their talent through songs, folk dances and folk lore. At the same time, they added to the knowledge of one another by exchanging a few words/ sentences of day to day conversation. Some contests were also organised which included learning and speaking some sentences or words of some other language, question and answers regarding their culture and posters depicting the evolution of languages.
On this occasion, the students presented a cultural programme consisting of folk dances of different states including Ghoomar and Kalbelia ( Rajasthan), Lavani (Maharastra), Matki Naach (Madhya Pardesh) , Dhumal ( Kashmir), Kannauri Nati ( Himachal Pardesh), Garba(Gujrat), Bihhu (Aasam), Karma (Jharkhand) Ghoomar ( Haryana) and Giddha- Bhangra, Malwai Giddha ( Punjab).
University Pro Vice Chancellor Dr. Chatterji said that the objective of celebrating this day is to promote love for one’s mother tongue and know about the languages of other states. She said that such programmes contributed to the all round development of the personalities of the students. Directors and staff members of different faculties were also present on the occasion.
