Kurukshetra, August 7 : One day seminar was organized by Department of Home Science, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra. The theme of the seminar was “Breast Feeding”. The Chief Guest of the event was CMO. Dr. Shiv Kumar and Dr.Jagmal (Pediatrician) from LNJP Hospital, Kurukshetra. Dr. Vinti Davar, Head of the department introduced the subject of the seminar. Dr. Shiv Kumar apprised the audience about growth of infants and importance of breast feeding.
He told that birth weight of the newborn baby should be 3 kg. which increases 25g/day for 5 months. A baby doubles his/her baby weight in 6 months and triples within 11 months i.e. 9 Kg. The breast feeding should be started within 1st hour, known as ‘Golden Hour’, of the birth of the baby. The first yellow lipuid secreted from the mother’s breast is called Colostrum which has great immunological powers for the baby. Dr. Jagmal talked about the techniques of the breast feeding, common diseases and their remedies. Dr. Jagmal also suggested that Janam Ghuti, Honey and water should not be the first feed of the baby’ it should be ‘Mother’s milk’.
The contact of mother’s body with the new born baby’s body is very beneficial for increasing the secretion of milk. Dr. Vinti Davar spoke about the nutritional value of the breast milk and benefits of breast feeding. She informed that infants who are breastfed show better immunity to diabetes, heart diseases and high blood pressure etc. It also controls incidence of breast cancer in later life.
She urged the students to help the mother’s in fighting with the myths about the breast feeding in the society and adopt breast feeding as long as they can. Dr. Tarvinder Jeet Kaur thanked all the guests, the students and faculty members for their presence. All the students of Department of Home Science & University College and B.Sc. Home Science students were present in the event. Dr. Sunita Madan, Dr. Tarvinder, Mrs. Suman Rani, Dr. Rajni Goel, Dr. Manju Narwal, Dr. Shweta Saini, Mrs. Nidhi, Mrs. Shivani Jain and Shreshtha Nuraal also participated in the seminar.
