Patiala : Department of Zoology and Environmental Sciences and Punjabi University Environment Society celebrated International Day for Biological Diversity and World Environment Day 2012 on 5th June 2012. On this occasion special seminar was organized in the Science Auditorium, Punjabi University, Patiala. This prestigious event is sponsored by National Biodiversity Authority, Govt. of India through Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST), Chandigarh.
Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Dr. Jaspal Singh inaugurated the seminar. He emphasised that Indian scriptures are the leading sources for protection of Biodiversity and Environment. Prof. B.D. Joshi, Professor, Deptt. of Zoology and Environmental Sciences, Gurukul Kangri University, Haridwar delivered the keynote address. He stressed that we should use our earth fossil fuels in a very judicious way. There will be water scarcity throughout the planet and green forest will be just 10% after 2050. Prof. S.S. Khehra, Deptt. of Law while delivering his lecture discussed the importance of various Laws for conservation of biodiversity and Environment. Dr. Dhiraj Kumar Sehgal, represented PSCST, Chandigarh. Prof. Devinder Singh, Head Deptt. of Zoology and Environmental Sciences, Prof. Jagbir Singh, President Punjabi University Environment Society and Dr. Onkar Singh Brraich, Organising Secretary of this workshop also expressed their views.
Early in the morning the 500 students and members of Environment society along with staff and students of Sr. Model School organised an awareness campaign and march in the Campus. The march was flagged off by Dean Academic Affairs, Registrar and Dean Colleges, Punjabi University, Patiala.
