In connection with the centaury celebration of legendary short story writer Sadat Hassan Manto the Department of Urdu, University of Jammu organized a Stage Play “Ghair Zarrori Log” based on Manto’s Short Story at Brigadier Rajinder Singh Auditorium, University of Jammu. Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu Prof. M.P. Singh Ishar was the Chief Guest on the occasion and Dy. Chairman Legislative Council Jb M.Y. Taing graced the occasion as Guest of Honor.
Prof. M.P. Singh Ishar Vice Chancellor University of Jammu in his address congratulated Department of Urdu for organizing the Play on a very important theme. Professor Ishar said that play like this is a great opporunity for the younger generation to know more about the Sadat Hussain and also said that writings of Sadat Hassan Manto has a great relevance in the present time too. While speaking on the occasion M Y Taing announced Rs. 5 Lakhs for proposed Sadat Hassan Manto Auditorium in the Jammu University out of his constituency development Fund.
While paying tributes to Manto Taing said he was a genius Short Story writer, constructing Sadat Hassan Manto Auditorium by Jammu University is a welcome step as Manto is the son of Soil. At the very outset the department of Urdu honored M.Y Taing for his nomination as Dy Chairman of the Legislative Council. Various speakers highlighted the qualities of head and heart of M.Y. Taing. On the occasion a memento and a shawl was presented to Taing by Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu. Earlier Prof. Shohab Inayat Malik HOD Urdu delivered the welcome address and also gave brief prifile of the play. It is worthwhile to mention herein that “Ghair Zarrori Log” stirs the collective memory, through the characters of Manto, to locate a specific political, social and cultural setting where an artist and his creation both turn into the “persona non grata”.
Taking away from the six of the best stories of the icon oblast, the play not only presents a prolific of our time but also makes a scathing comment on our misdemeanors to humanity. It underlines the politics of boundaries we apply to disown the very people who are, in-fact, the real constituent of any civic order. On the occasion a Book “Bachoon Ka Adab” written by Prof. Shaz Sherki was also released by the dignities of the function.
