Panchkula : Amidst a host of thought provoking sessions on various social issues, The Gurukul Sector 20 Panchkula on Thursday launched its Students Legal Literacy Club- the first and the only Literacy club in any private school in Haryana- under the aegis of the Haryana State Legal Services Authority . Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Hon’ble Mr.Justice AK Sikri was the chief guest on the occasion.
An insightful documentary, video-graphed by the school in village Mandhana near here in Morni, demonstrated the zeal with which students of The Gurukul brought awareness among people of the village on daunting issues of child labour, domestic violence and dowry. The documentary showed how students went door to door educating villagers, distributing pamphlets and information brochures on legal literacy and deciphering relevant information about helpline numbers in case of urgent distress.
The event began with a traditional lamp lighting ceremony and a Saraswati Vandana to pay obeisance to the Lord. Justice Hemant Gupta and Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia of the High Court also graced the occasion. An English ballet on the theme of domestic violence earned a thunderous applause from the audiences. Another short Hindi play by students of the school highlighted the grave and menacing social ill of rampant child labour in the society. The play reflected the sorrows and doleful predicament of a poor child who, like any other growing kid yearns for a good life, but is forced into everyday chores as a child labourer in miserable poverty.
This emotional presentation was followed by a contemporary dance performance by students on a host of social issues that need urgent intervention. Principal of the school Harsimran Kaur said the school is privileged to be a part of such a noble cause. “I sincerely hope this initiative of the Legal Literacy club bears fruitful results both for the students and the society.”
