Mohali 13 October : Aryans Group of Colleges, Chandigarh celebrated “International Day for Disaster Reduction” today. The students of B.Tech, MBA, BBA, BCA, B.Ed, Polytechnic, GNM etc. of Aryans participated in the rally held in nearby villages on the occasion. The students holding the placards, made the people aware about the various natural disasters and ways to reduce them.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. B S Sidhu, Registrar, Aryans Group said that “International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR)” which is observed worldwide on 13th October every year, encourages every citizen and government to take part in building more disaster resilient communities and nations.
Prof Sidhu added that this year, the focus of the International Day for Disaster Reduction is on some one billion people around the world who live with some form of disability. This theme is a part of a “Step Up Initiative” started in 2011 focusing on different group of partners every year leading up to the World Conference for Disaster Reduction in 2015. In 2011 the theme was Children and Young People, in 2012 it was Women and Girls and in 2014 the theme would be the ageing population.
Prof A P Jain, Director, Aryans Group said that this is a day to celebrate how people and communities are reducing their risk to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). He added that DRR is about making communities and individuals aware of their risk to natural hazards and how they can reduce their vulnerability.
It is to be mentioned that The “International Day for Disaster Reduction” started in 1989 with the approval by the United Nations General Assembly. The UN General Assembly sees the IDDR as a way to promote a global culture of disaster reduction.
