Y.S. RANA , CHANDIGARH : Bits of old newspapers, magazines, clothes, wood or button can make a beautiful paintings proved by the students (age 10 to 16 years) of Navodaya Vidyalaya, Titram in Kaithal. Twenty paintings including personalities like Rajiv Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Guru Nanak Dev, Shirdi Sai Baba and animals life horse, dog are drawn by around 30 students of the Vidyalaya in two years of time have been exhibited in Sector 10 Museum and Art Gallery.
The six days exhibition of collage paintings is being held at the Museum premises under Outreach Activity Centre, government of India’s scheme attracts a lot of visitors daily. So far more than 200 local as well as foreigners have visited the exhibition.
Most of the paintings displayed in the exhibition are a combination of painting, mosaic and collage. Collages made of textured paper are very stunning and unique. “Collage is sticking bits of old paper, cloth, wood, photographic lay into a pattern or on a drawing. Decoupage, sgraffitto, photomontage, dechirage, froissage, frottage, brulage, fumage, decollage are some of the terms in collage,” said Daisy Vekrma, art teacher.
She further added that art of collage paintings might be developed from mosaic pattern. The techniques developed by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso have drawn an attention of the artists towards collage paintings. Then it has become a part of techniques of the artists in almost all the major art movements of 20th century, she stated and said that this genre of art was used in futurism, surrealism, constructivism and PopArt.
The exhibition is an endeavor of rigorous students’ work, most of them belong to rural areas under stewardship of Daisy Verma.
The Director, Public Relations, UT, Chandigarh, M.M. Sabharwal visited the exhibition and said though it was a small step but an excellent effort of the students. Such more exhibitions should be held and these provided a plateform to them to showcase their hidden talent.
Mr Suresh Kumar Sharma, Deputy Commissioner, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, Chandigarh inaugurated the exhibition on October 17 said “Wonderful creation of children.”
The effort of Outreach Activity Centre gives ample evidence of promotion of creative art in sync with the social objectives.
