CHANDIGARH, AUG 29 : The Chandigarh Education Department today honoured 255 students and 41 officials of different schools on the National Sports Day at the Sector 10 Saking Rink here today. The function was organized to celebrate the birthday of hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand. The Government has declared the birthday of Dhyan Chand as the National Sports Day which is celebrated throughout the country. UT Finance-cum-Sports Secretary, Mr. V.K. Singh honouring the sportspersons.
The winners of the first position (individual events) in 58 National School Games were given a cash award of Rs 5000 each. Second position winners got Rs 3000 each and bronze medalists Rs 2000 each.
In team events the first position got Rs. 1000 each player, Rs 700 each player for second position and Rs. 500 for 3rd position in National School Games organised under the aegis of School Games Federation of India.
International tennis player Bhavya Wadahwan who represented India, was honoured with a cash prize of Rs. 5000.
All 41 teachers got cash prize of Rs. 1500 each.
Bhangra was performed by the students DAV School Sector -8.
Meanwhile an Annual Sports meet 2013 was organized at Model Jail, Chandigarh. Competitions were organized in volleyball, kabbadi, badminton, table tennis, shot-put, chess and carrom.
The final kabbadi match was also played.
Mr Maneesh Chaudhry, IPS, Inspector General of Prisons, U.T., Chandigarh was the chief guest of the function. He said although sports were played in jail since its inception but the interest of prisoner is increased by this well organized event, where their talent is recognized and rewarded.
It is endeavoring positive changes in the behaviour of inmates. He said that the aim of prison department is to reform and rehabilitate prisoners and they will look into each and every aspect to achieve this goal so that the neglected one could be bring into main stream to serve the society and nation.
Additional I.G.Prs. Balbir Singh Dhol, PCS gave vote of thanks to the Chief Guest for support and boasting the morale of inmates and also spoke that games are the way to keep the person mentally and physically fit which plays a greater role in case of prisoners.
