86th Raising Day of Military Nursing Service (MNS) was celebrated today under the able guidance of Brig S Ninan, Principal Matron, Command Hospital (Western Command). On this memorable day, Nursing Officers rededicated themselves whole heartedly to keep the motto of the core ‘Service with smile’. In the evening an Officer Mess function was organised and Lt Gen S R Ghosh, GOC-in-C Western Command was the Chief Guest. Many other senior officers also attended this function.The history of Military Nursing Service comprising of only women officers, dates back to 28 March 1888 with the arrival of the first batch of 10 Qualified British nurses in Bombay, to organize Nursing in Military Hospital in India. Nurses were enrolled in India for the first time in 1914. On 01 Oct 1926, a permanent nursing service for the India troops was formed and was designated as Indian Military Nursing Service (IMNS).
With the outbreak of World War II the IMNS further expanded and great improvement was noticed in the hospitals where the nurses served, patients were better cared for and wards were efficiently run. The Indian Military Service was raised by an ordinance in Sep 1943. The member of service become commissioned officers in Military Nursing Service (India) and were referred to as the Officers of Military Nursing Service. Military Nursing service stands out as one of the oldest service where women have contributed to provide service to the sick and wounded.
MNS is an integral part of the Armed Forces and render service to the hospitals in the Army, Navy and Air Force establishments. It is an integrated glorious service with an enduring ability to deliver effective nursing care to the sick and wounded, despite all constraints. The mission of MNS is “Excellence in patient care” both in war and peace, which is pursued with utmost fervor, zeal and zest. The officers of MNS have not only served in India but also have played a vital role in UN missions to Lebanon, Cambodia, Somalia etc.
Today there are five Schools of Nursing for Diploma Programme and three Colleges of Nursing for undergraduate and post graduate training. Students are trained in these institutions and are commissioned in Military Nursing Service as regular and short service Commissioned officers.
