15 Jan : The CISF has speeded up the recruitment of a total of 40,000 additional men, with 13,000 in the first phase, to meet additional responsibilities arising from being asked to protect private sector entities and undertake UN Peacekeeping missions.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has approximately 1,09,000 personnel now and with more than ninety percent of its strength on active deployment, urgently needs additional men to carry out its new responsibilities.
"With more than 90 percent of the force on active deployment, the recruiting and training procedures will gather momentum now," a home ministry official said.
The current recruitment is part of the 40,000 additional strength that the government had earlier sanctioned to the force.
"Thirteen thousand posts in the ranks of constables till the level of assistant sub-inspectors would be filled up in a phased manner as a part of the perspective planning for the force.
"This will also help it to meet the new responsibilities after the government promulgated an ordinance for mandating CISF to protect the private sector and carry out UN Peacekeeping duties," the official said.
The official, however, said "The force can immediately take up its new responsibilities whenever the government asks it to by primarily deploying its eight reserve battalions."
The cap for the CISF troop strength is around 1,46,000 which will be filled up in a phased manner.
"As a provision has also been made to facilitate deputation of CISF personnel on UN Peacekeeping missions abroad, the force strength will have to be used judiciously," the official said.
Leading corporate houses like Tata, Oberoi and Infosys had earlier approached the Union home ministry for CISF cover in the wake of the Mumbai terror strikes.
Officials of the force will also start taking up security audits for all such firms which approach the Central government for protection now, he said.
The security consultancy assignments that the CISF carries out now are broadly classified into three categories — large, medium and small — depending on the strategic importance, size, annual turnover and manpower employed by the concerned company or organisation.
The CISF works on a cost reimbursement basis as it charges a fee on the organisation to which it provides security.
"The rates that the government charges for these services depend on the same criteria used for the consultancy categorisation. The fire audit comes with an additional charge and both charges may be revised in the future," the MHA official said.
The CISF protects vital installations like the Taj Mahal, the Delhi Metro, nuclear power plants, hydel power plants and various other government undertakings.
The government promulgated the Ordinance to facilitate deployment of CISF for security of private sector enterprises on 12th January.
