8 Feb : The Government has decided to carry out a pilot survey to study the impact of its flagship rural job guarantee programme NREGA in Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan, where maximum work is done under the scheme.
"We have asked the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) to do a survey on works done under NREGA and its impact on rural development including asset creation in villages," Rita Sharma, Secretary, Rural Development told reporters during an interactive session at New Delhi.
She said that NSSO would first carry out a pilot survey in these three states.
"We have asked NSSO to submit the survey report to us within a year. NSSO has already pilot-tested the questionnaire and its other instruments for survey, which will begin shortly," she added.
The survey, which is separate from various micro level audits and assessments of NREGA works, will be extended to all other states if the pilot projects establish their feasibility, she said.
The survey is likely to be the second large scale assessment of the NREGA work after the CAG audit carried out by the government in first year of NREGA’s implementation.
The NSSO will survey NREGA’s impact on poverty alleviation not only directly through the wages but also indirectly through assets creation.
"We were discussing the issue of survey for last three-four months. It is going to cost the government around Rs 3.5 crore," she said.
The survey is expected to give us a macro level picture of the benefits NREGA gave to the rural populace in the country, she added.
