By Roohi Gupta , Punjab : In Indian culture, since very early periods man have dominated women as a group. Their general status in the family has been low. In the relationship between man and woman, it is the individual with a powerful personality acquires a position of dominance. In the families, the birth of daughter is greeted by disappointment. A daughter’s neglect begin at birth or earlier at the foetal stage. Such an unwelcoming ethos demeans girls and their childhood causing a last damage. A damage is worse because it affects all areas of childhood needs. There is always a strong preferences for the birth of sons rather than daughter. In 1983, a world fertility survey found that of approximately 40 developing countries, in only two Venezuela and Jamaica ,did daughter preference before birth prevail. The strongest son preference was expressed in Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan. There are many liberal feminists theory whose central argument is that women remain enslaved because of a corrupt process of socialization which teaches them that their purpose in life is to serve man. She was created to be the toy of man and jingle in his ears to amuse him.
Our freedom leaders began many reform movements for women. They felt the need to improve the status of women in society. But still our society is following the path of gender discrimination. One thing is to keep in mind that we are not talking about the difference between the status of rural and urban woman. Both of them are the subject of domination, verbal abuse, sexual harassment, wife beating, dowry related violence, pornography, prostitution etc..The most hurting situation is the considering of a daughter as burden. Parent’s first preference is to having a male child. Woman is always a marginal and weaker section of our society.
Man is ever placed between her & reason, she is permitted to see the world through his vision. If women take decision incorrectly, its is only due to lack of education. Lack of education prevent her from perceiving the general principles behind the fact. Right to education enable her to take decisions independently and think for themselves who they want to control their lives. The root cause of subordination of women in society lies in the complete economic dependence of them on men. Men and women have same morals. They should receive same education, training, working atmosphere , respect and equality in the society.”
I interacted to my maid Tulsa kumar who is widow having four children. She told me that after the death of her husband she had to face many problems even from the side of her family. They forced her to get marry with her brother-in-law who was drunkard. He wanted to live with her only for money. They tortured her in many ways when she refused for marriage. They did even physical violence with her.” Women should not be the subject of crime and insult. She should acquire the same status as man have. Our society must change their thought for women and let them come to do something better for themselves. They are also the precious part of our society. We should not neglect them.
