We live in a labour-saving and mechanized society, which is eliminating more and more physical exertion from our day to day life. The industrial development is responsible for mechanical devices such as washing machine, water pumps, vacuum cleaner, cooking gas, vehicles and labour for domestic work. Computer, Radio, C.D players have reduced normal physical activities such as playing in the field, walking, running, jumping and other activities reduced. Due to less physical activity we are suffering with so many diseases like over-weight, under-weight, heart problem, cancer and so many others.
Physical Activity is defined as any force extorted by skeletal muscle that results in energy expenditure above resting level and includes the full range of human movement or any competitive sports and exercise to active hobbies walking and cycling or activities in daily life. Physical activity refers to any bodily movement produces by skeletal muscles and resulting in energy expenditure. Physical activity and exercise affect many of the dimensions of health. Activeness of living beings are natural and the basis for life. Movement is born with living beings and life is characterized by movements. All functions of the organism unicellular or multi-cellular depend upon movement starts in an individual right from the very movement of conception.
In the scenario of today’s life man is leading towards total automatic and is gradually making least efforts with his body. Biology emphasizes that this should not continue, otherwise man will forfeit his body and become lump of brawn and brain. If we want to stand with the hazards of changing environment we must run, jump, climb, swim and engage in play and sports that have engrossed human beings since the ancient times. These are the basic modes of our biological behaviour.
Physical activity affects our mood and mental health. These are three major reasons for considering this topic. The first is that mental health is one of the important components of complete well-being that has been associated with physical activity may be useful in reducing. Psychological distress among people in the general population and in the treatment of more serious problem such as clinical depression and anxiety secondly, physical activity may help people in cope with stress more effectively, and reduce emotional reactions to stressful life events. Thirdly an understanding of the beneficial psychological consequences of physical activity may help to enhance adherence to training programmes, and the development of schedules that minimize dropout factor and life long active habits.
The Nottingham longitudinal study of Activity and ageing was set up in 1983 to assess the role of lifestyle and customary physical activity in promoting and maintaining mental health and psychological well being in later life.
Customary physical activity was defined as those activities with a probable minimum energy cost of 2kcal/min, performed continuously for a minimum of 3 minutes, at least weekly for at least the previous 6 weeks. Those activities were divided into five mutually exclusive categories. Outdoor productive activities, e.g. gardening house and car maintenance indoor productive activities, e.g. house work decorating, indoor maintenance walking, i.e. purposeful walking outside the house or garden, shopping i.e. continuous ambulatory behaviour associated with shopping and leisure activities e.g. cycling, swimming callisthenics, walking was included as a leisure activities.
