16 Mar : The investiture ceremony for the “KIRTI CHAKRA AWARD” to Late Shri N. N. Bora posthumously will be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 19th March 2009. Shri N.N. Bora, a train driver of Lumding Division in Northeast Frontier Railway, was awarded this second most important gallantry award posthumously for his act of bravery exhibited in saving lives of 34 railway men on board a special train, which after leaving Mupa station in Lumding – Badarpur MG hill section of Northeast Frontier Railway was under heavy fire by militants.
The train was coming out of a tunnel. Despite his injury caused by firing of militants train Driver, Shri N.N. Bora, who subsequently succumbed to his injuries, did an excellent job by reversing the Passenger Special train inside the tunnel and thereby saving life of others. The incident happened on 15th May 2008.
The investiture ceremony will be held on 19th March 2009 in a glittering function in Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Kirti Chakra is peace time equivalent to Maha Vir Chakra awarded for bravery action in battle field. It is second in order of precedence of peace time gallantry awards and comes after Ashoka Chakra and before Shaurya Chakra. The award consists of a medal, a citation and life long stipend of Rs.2100/- per month.
