13 Dec : National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has called for a review of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, saying it is widely being misused across the country.
Talking to reporters at Varanasi on Saturday, Prof N M Kamble, Vice Chairman of NCSC, said many states have reported about the misuse of the Act and they have been asked to send their reports in this regard.
After reviewing implementation of the welfare schemes for the SCs in the Varanasi division, Kamble said the conviction rate in cases of atrocities against members of the community is very low.
The reason behind it may be that in some cases the accused enter into a compromise with the victims and sometime the witnesses don’t turn up, he added.
