By Panditrao Dharennavar : Malkait Singh , young councilor of Chandigarh municipal corporation is no more with us. The end of dedicated social worker and son of former Councilor of MCM is rather sad affair. Malkeet Singh was given all the respect and praise after his death but when he was alive and struggling to draw the attention of higher authorities towards civic problems, nobody bothered. The irony of our social system is, we do not recognize the right work of right person in his living time but as soon as he is passed away from the this world, all kind of praise and respect pour in. Another irony of our political system is, we do not give respect to our elected Representatives. We take them for granted for all the reasons. I think Malkait Singh was the victim of this horrible political system.
The elected representatives need respect from the society. The elected representatives can not be twenty four hours servants of the society. The elected representatives who work tireless, need rest and special health care. The people who give vote to these representatives always expect high amount of service from Elected representatives. It was well known fact that Malkait Singh who was on study trip fell ill when he was on official tour. It was the duty of concerned authority to shift him to good hospital instead of putting him in local hospital in Puduchrry.
It was even sad to witness the lesson taught by honorable administrator to all the members of MCM who went to seek job for deceased Malkait Singh’s wife. The dignity of women was not maintained by the members who directly asked job for wife of Malkait Singh . The fact of matter is wife deserves more respect and higher position in society because Malkait Singh has unfinished tasks which can be fulfilled by his wife only. She can be very well elected representative of the MCC. If the constitution of MCC does not permit for mid term election, then the amendment of the Constitution can be done with the permission from Honorable Administrator. People of City Beautiful could have been happy, had elected representatives of MCC gone to seek the special election for deceased Malkait Singh’s wife.
There is no doubt that Malkait Singh has done many works for his ward, Badhehari( 41 Sector). He sat for Dharana till the order was passed for making roads in his village Badhehari. He was popular and promising leader who was infact loved by all the section of society. The beauty of his personality was, he not only used to go to door to door for seeking votes but also knocked the doors of many residents of sector 41 to ask the problems. It is his father, Gurnam Singh’s legasy he carried on. Malkait Singh made sure that there is no single alcohol shop in his village Badhehari.
I was pleased for gesture when he came down from stage of one of big program for shaking hands with me. I will never forget the words he said in my eyes” tussi Punjabi Board banna ke sannu karajadar banna ditta, Tannawad Rao Saheb” I did not utter single word but smiled and hugged him. I Never thought it would be last hug which infact made me more strong to put more and more Punjabi boards in front of Mandir, Masjid, Gurudwara saheb, Church and Police Stations. Inspiration from Malkait Singh can lead us to work more for making this city more beautiful. (BY Panditrao Dharennavar, Assistant Professor, PG Govt College, Sector-46 Chandigarh
