This award is given to only one doctor in any year for their outstanding contribution to critical care in Asia.
Dr Jain is a pioneer in the field of Critical Care medicine in India. He has been the Founder President of the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine. He is currently the Chairman of the Critical Care Education Foundation and the College of Critical Care Medicine.
Dr P.K. Jain has been the founder editor of the Indian Journal of Critical Care Medicine and Critical Care Asia and is on the editorial board of many national and international medical journals. Dr P.K. Jain is also a popular teacher in Critical Care Medicine. His weekly classes in Mumbai are attended by resident ICU doctors and intensivists from most of the hospitals in Mumbai. His 4-day residential training program in critical care medicine (for senior doctors) is held in Mumbai every three months and is attended by consultants from all over India. Its popularity can be gauged by the waiting period of almost 18 months to attend after enrolling.
Dr Jain is an expert in setting up of and management of high quality Intensive Care Units. He has set up the ICU at Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai and was the Chief of ICU there for many years. He also has set up ICUs at Sir H.N. Hospital (Mumbai), Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences (Calicut), and Phenomenal Hospital (Latur). Dr Jain is advisor to many major ICUs across the country including the 170 bedded ICU at Amrita Hospital (Cochin).
He is currently associated with training of ICU doctors at Alchemist Hospital, Panchkula, which is one of the 52 hospitals in the country where the ICU is certified as a training centre for the 2 year Indo-Australian Fellowship examination (the only ICU north of Delhi). This recognition by the College of Critical Care Medicine, not only acknowledges availability of good ICU equipments but availability of good ICU trained physicians round-the-clock at Alchemist Hospital.
Dr Jain believes in high quality critical care that is of international quality, delivered in a patient and relative friendly manner. He is particular that relatives of patients are periodically informed about the progress of their patient in a relaxed atmosphere of a counselling room. Relatives of patients admitted in the ICU at Alchemist Hospital can also interact with Dr P. K. Jain via telemedicine setup.
