By Mariela Govea* : The foundation of Bill Gates launched a competition to improve the prophylactic industry.
It ´s been a long time it was missing some kind of innovation in regards to the condom industry. And I do not mean innovations, for example, such as, condoms flavored with chocolate or strawberry, which already are in the market.
. What I’m talking about is that, is that a radical change is needed, in both the product, as in the image and the impact of these changes in the minds of the consumers.
I mean, besides improving the quality of condoms, and make them closer and friendl
y to people, it is needed to associate condoms to a positive message to people around the world.
And it was Bill Gates who came to launch a competition to develop a project. As I see it, not only condoms will be approved, also, it will have a major impact on global health, reducing unwanted pregnancies and reducing the possibility of transmission of all types of sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS.
The monetary incentive offer is tempting: it will be paid up to $ 100,000 for the winning project, and then, even, is the possibility of a million more.
There are already several companies working on it: a company in California would be developing an origami condom designed to create feelings of pleasure, while researchers at Washington University are creating a high-tech condom.
In order to choose the best project the idea of including an action plan that can be tested and based on real evidence is needed ..
One of the conditions is that consoms should be easier to be used, something that we, as sexologists would greatly appreciate, and, it would also help us to make our work much easier in the future..
Among the other conditions are a nice design and a better pack
How would a condom designed by Philippe Starke would look like, in case he participates ? Who knows?
But above all, I think the most important thing , along with a new campaign that reinforce the positive message that should be associated with the use of condoms, would be the of the taboos and cultural barriers that still exist, all over the world, although it is difficult to believe . In that sense, in no way would be accepted projects that could increase the price of condoms, as condoms are suitable for developing countries with low income per cápita. As I see it, , will be awarded the Rolls Royce of condoms accessible to all .
Sure, and easier to use, it iwould be desirable that the new condom were organic, re-usable, recyclable, technological and why not? Even with colored lights, if possible …. well, that would allow the user experience to be more enjoyable for couples.
Long life to condoms.
