India unveils first indigenous vaccine against swine flu

3 June : India on Thursday unveiled its first indigenous vaccine against the dreaded swine flu which claimed over 18,000 lives globally and more than 1,000 in the country.
The country was earlier importing the vaccine from French company, Sanofi Pasteurs, for only health workers and other high-risk people.

The vaccine, produced by Zydus Cadilla, was launched on Thursday by Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who took one of the first shots.

5 Nov : With swine flu claiming over 470 lives in the country till October-end, the Centre has said the much-awaited Influenza A-H1N1 vaccine to combat the viral disease would be ready by March-April next year.

“Private pharmaceutical companies are in the advanced stage of developing the vaccine and it will be ready by March or April next year,” Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said in Chandigarh on Tuesday.

2 Oct : In an attempt to fight the menace of Swine Flu, an anti-swine flu drug Tamil flu is being launched by the Govt of India in the licenced shops across the country.
The launch of the drug came at a time when the deadly virus has claimed 257 lives and affected 8,153 people in the country.

WHO warns of swine flu pandemic’s second wave

23 Aug : The World Health Organisation is urging the planet to brace for a second wave of the swine flu pandemic as the heavily populated northern hemisphere edges towards the cooler season when flu thrives.
“The WHO is still mobilised and worried,” spokesman Gregory Hartl said as the global health watchdog kept an anxious eye on some “mysterious” patterns of illness associated with the new A (H1N1) virus that appeared in April.
