Intl Congress of Mathematicians begins tomorrow at Hyderabad

18 Aug : India will host the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), the largest congregation of mathematicians from across the globe, for the first time in Hyderabad, beginning on Thursday.
President Pratibha Patil will inaugurate the nine-day event at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre in Hyderabad on Thursday.
Over 3,000 delegates from about 75 countries will attend the ICM being held under the auspices of International Mathematical Union (IMU).

Vertical-launch version of BrahMos test-fired successfully

21 Mar : India on Sunday became the first country to have a ‘manoeuvrable’ supersonic cruise missile when it successfully test-fired the vertical-launch version of 290-km range BrahMos from a warship in the Bay of Bengal off the Orissa coast.
“The vertical-launch version of missile was launched at 1130 hours today from Indian Navy ship INS Ranvir and it manoeuvred successfully hitting the target ship. It was a perfect hit and a perfect mission,” BrahMos aerospace chief A Sivathanu Pillai told the news agency.

Javed Akhtar, Aiyar among five nominated

19 Mar : Noted lyricist Javed Akhtar and Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar were on Friday nominated to Rajya Sabha along with three others.

Noted economist and former Planning Commission member Bhalchandra Mungekar, Educationist Ram Dayal Munda and theatre personality B Jayshree are the other three who have been nominated by President Pratibha Patil.
There were 12 vacancies of nominated members in Rajya Sabha. Recently six people including noted journalist H K Dua were nominated by the President.

Nation celebrates birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri

2 oct :  The nation celebrates the 140th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and 105th birth anniversary of India’s second Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on Friday.

N-energy benefits should not remain confined to few: PM

30 Sep :  Seeking international cooperation in its efforts for a major expansion in the nuclear programme, India said benefits of atomic energy should not remain confined to a “privileged few” as it was vital to meet power requirements of developing countries.
