Y.S. RANA, CHANDIGARH—May 12—Finish the 10-year dominance of Manipur in fencing, that too within two years of its inception, the fencing academy set up at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10, Chandigarh, has made its presence at national level. The way the academy is responding to the innovative efforts of the UT Administration to churn out fencers from City Beautiful, the Academy is bound to leave dots on the national fencing canvas.
Disclosing this here to the India Post, Mr Sandeep Hans, DPI (Schools), Chandigarh, who is the brain behind the Academy, said that the Academy was launched in 2010 and nursed by the Chandigarh Administration, has succeeded in producing fencers both for the senior and junior teams. Within one year of its inception, fencers of the Academy had started scripted success stories not only at national level but also in Commonwealth Games. One of its fencers, Prabhjot has won silver medal in Commonwealth Games concluded in February last, he stated.
Another fencer, Gunjan Singh, sixth rankers under -17, had found slot in the list of six fencers who were attending senior India camp. Six to eight fencers were being selected for this camp across the country, he added. “There are about 60 fencers getting training at the Academy. Some of them have the talent to be global standard fencers but they need more guidance to hone their skills and it is being provided to them,” stated Mr Hans.
The fencers are being trained by Charanjit Kaur, also the first captain of Indian Fencing team. She is the only fencing coach in the region. She is also trained fencers from Panjab University, Chandigarh. “There are around 60 fenders in the academy,” said Chanranjit Kaur. She also won medal in Asian Games. Amused by the successes of her trainees, she said that her fencers had done exceptional good in the National School Games-2011 by winning 30 medals in individual as well as in team categories. Chandigarh team ranked first under 14 (boys and girls); under-17 (girls) under-19 both boys and girls.
She added that things have started changing at the Academy and she can surely look forward to more fencers from the city even in Asian Games. Chandigarh had won seven medals in the National Games-2011 held at Ranchi, three were bagged by fencers of this Academy, she stated.
“Determined to draw budding talent to the field of sports, the education department in collaboration with the sports department has set up academies for fencing, hockey and football in schools last year. These academies are playing a key role in picking up young players, honing their basic skills, firming up their mental fibre and strengthening their physical ability to compete with the best at national level,” said Mr Hans.
On infrastructure, Mr Hans said that part of infrastructure has been provided at these academies. “Funds are being arranged to equip these academies with latest technology. The efforts will show results in the years to come,” he said. Further he disclosed that he was finding a way out to make arrangements for diet to the trainees as most of them belonged to middle or poor families and could not afford nuterious diet.
