Mumbai: Springfield Rizvi, Mumbai’s famed batting lineup let their school down when it mattered most, handing rivals KDMA Kanpur a facile six-wicket win in the final of the Coca-Cola Cup Under-16 Cricket Tournament, Inter-State leg, which concluded here at the Western Railway ground, on Monday.
The decision to bat first after winning toss backfired on Springfield Rizvi as their batsmen failed to come to terms with the four-pronged spin attack employed by KDMA, Kanpur and their innings folded up for a modest 106 in 36.2 overs.
One down bat Sarfaraz Khan was the only player who possessed the footwork and skills to tackle the spinner and emerged the top scorer for Rizvi after compiling a patient 53 from 94 deliveries with one huge six and four hits to the ropes. However, Sarfaraz steadily ran out of partners and options and by the time he departed, the ninth wicket to fall, rivals KDMA were already scenting victory.
Left-arm spinner Shivam Dixit and Mayank Singh led the charge for KDMA, scalping four and three wickets respectively. Another left arm spinner Shubham Sharma helped himself to two, while right arm off spinner Bilal Firoz got one to complete the rout.
It was not the best of starts for KDMA’s chase, with two batsmen back in the pavilion and the scoreboard reading just 10, before man of the match Amit Pachara steadied the boat with an unbeaten 60 from 49 deliveries, and in partnership with captain Ayush Atri (29 not out) steered his team to victory.
For Rizvi too it was spin that worked, left arm spinner Yash Chavan grabbing 2 for 48 from 9 overs.
Winners KDMA will take home a purse of Rs 1 lakh, while Springfield Rizvi earned Rs 70,000 for their efforts. Rizvi’s all-rounder Sarfaraz Khan was adjudged Man of the Series for scoring 305 runs and taking nine wickets.
