LUDHIANA, June 21 : The Ludhiana chapter of the Indian Menopause Society (IMS) was inaugurated here yesterday with Dr Iqbal Singh Ahuja of the Iqbal Nurshing Home and Hospital, as its founder secretary general and Dr MS Chawla as joint secretary.
Speaking on the occasion Dr Duru Shah chairperson of the Indian College of Obstetrics and Gyanaecologists, who was the Chief Guest, said, there was an urgent need to create awareness about the menopause. She said, most women suffered because of the lack of awareness.
She observed, the times had changed and there was no need to accept the problems like hot flushes, sweating, depression and other related symptoms as a “natural calamity”. She disclosed that everything was treatable and curable and the menopause period can always be made as comfortable as any other phase of life with little awareness, precautions and medication.
Dr Shah pointed out, the deficiency of calcium and the consequent weakening of bones was one of the most prevailing problems among the women. She suggested that the women getting into the menopause stage should have proper calcium intake and must also have a healthy attitude towards life.
Addressing the function Dr Iqbal, the pioneer of IVF technology (test tube baby) in north India, said, despite so much prosperity in the region, there was too much ignorance about this common problem which comes into the life of every woman. He said, he always felt the need to set up the Ludhiana chapter of the IMS as it would certainly help in involving the doctors and gyanaecologists so that they create awareness among the patients.
