JALANDHAR, JAN 23 : Government Model School of Jalandhar will meet Birsa Munda School of Rourkela and local outfit Lyallpur Khalsa School will cross swords with Bright Scholars of Sonepat in the semi-finals of the 5th All- India Balwant Singh Kapur Hockey Tournament being played at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here today.
In quarter-final matches Government Model School of Jalandhar got the better of Government Senior Secondary School, Jharsa (Gurgaon) with an aggregate 4-2 margin on penalties after sharing two goals in the regulation period and Birsa Munda outplayed Rihar Regimental Centre of Danapur by 5-2.
The quarter-final match between Government Model School of Jalandhar and Government Senior Secondary School, Jharsa was fought on equal terms in the stipulated period. Government Model School of Jalandhar forged ahead in the 12th with a field goal scored by Manpreet Singh. Government Senior Secondary School, Jharsa equalized four minutes from close when Rohit Malik converted a penalty corner. With the stipulated session ending in a one-all draw, the organizers applied the tie-breaker rule to resolve the dispute. In the tie-breaker session, Jalandhar boys scored through Gursharan, Sukhmanjit, Singh and Satbir Singh. Ashok Malik was the lone Jharsa player to convert his stroke.
In the second quarter-final encounter, Birsa Munda dominated and capitalized on most of the chances which came their way to rout Bihar Regimental Centre by 5-2. Birsa Munda shot into the lead in the sixth minute through a field goal scored by A Tirkey in the sixth minute. Puneet Bengra converted a penalty corner in the 22nd minute to neutralize the lead.
Birsa Munda forged ahead against when Amit converted a penalty corner in the 20th minute and Suresh Toppo made it 3-1 in the 40th minute. Maintaining their pressure, Vikas Khajur further enhanced the lead in the 63rd minute. In a nothing to lose situation, BRC got their second goal Jagannath who fired a field goal in the 66th minute. However, one minute before the hooter, Vikas Khajur further increased the victory margin for Birsa Munda.
