CHANDIGARH, June 4: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Capt Amarinder Singh today welcomed the decision of the Italian government allowing the security checks without getting the turbans removed.
The decision comes after the issue was taken up by the government of India with the Italian government at the highest level since this practice hurt the religious sentiments of Sikhs, one of the important religions of the world.
Capt Amarinder Singh hailed the efforts of the Congress led United Progressive Alliance government at the centre which took up the matter with the Italian government through the external affairs ministry.Earlier the security agencies in Italy removed the turbans of people for the security check. Since this practice hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikhs, the government of India took up the matter with Italian government which ultimately conceded to India’s demand.
The PCC President expressed confidence that other governments in Europe and the West will appreciate and understand the Indian concerns and follow the Italian practice as a mark of respect for the Sikh religion. He said, since the government of India had already taken up the matter with various governments, he hoped the efforts will bear similar results in those countries as well.
