Amritsar, August 6 (Prabhjot Gill)– A new Waste Water Treatment Plant, first of its kind in the Universities of North India was inaugurated here today at the Guru Nanak Dev University campus by renowned environmentalists Mr. Sunderlal Bahuguna and Magsaysay awardee Mr. Rajendra Singh, a University press note said.
Prof. Dr. Jai Rup Singh, Vice-Chancellor said the Treatment Plant built at a cost of Rs. 36 lacs is the first of its kind in the Universities of North India, has a treatment capacity of 2.5 million litres per day and this could be augmented upto 5 million litres depending upon future requirement. Moreover, it is a cheaper and a great power saver. The treated water would be used for the irrigation purposes.
The plant jointly designed by the environmental experts of the Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences and the Engineering Department of the University, has been constructed for reuse of domestic waste water as per WHO guidelines.
The Vice-Chancellor said the Waste Water Treatment Plant has three tanks. First primary tank is an aerating tank followed by secondary treatment Tube deck (Activated Sludge Process) and then tertiary treatment with aerobic maturation ponds. The Plant would use blue green algae and is proposed to achieve zero waste water discharge.
Among other, Mrs. Bahuguna, Mr. Umendra Dutt, Registrar Dr. R.S. Bawa, Environmental Scientist Dr. A.K. Thukral, Prof. G.S. Virk, Dr. Saroj Arora, Mr. Mokesh Kumar Sharma, President of All India Pingalwara Charitable Society Dr. Inderjit Kaur, a large number of faculty & staff and officers of the University were present on this occasion.
