Shimla,28 May:Identifying dowry, child marriage, female foeticide and growing consumption of intoxicants as social evils gripping the country, President Pratibha Patil today said there was a need to root them out by launching a people’s movement.
There is a need to strongly deal with them, Patil said at a function at the historic Ridge Maidan, where she was accorded a civic reception on her first visit to Himachal Pradesh after becoming President.
She expressed confidence that people would achieve victory over these evils collectively.The President expressed concern over low literacy rate among women and said it has to be increased and added that more effective steps were needed in the field of women empowerment.
She also emphasised another green revolution in the country to increase foodgrain stock.Patil said that for rapid development of the country, it was necessary that every state and union territory do its bit.
She pointed to the tremendous scope of development in the field of Information Technology and Ayurveda and said Himachal Pradesh could take the lead in the two fields.
