Y.S. Rana, CHANDIGARH- May 28 — The Tagore Theatre Society under the aegis of Department of Cultural Affairs, Chandigarh Administration is organizing three-day Women Directors Theatre festival from May 30 to June 1 at Tagore Theatre, Sector 18 Chandigarh.
The festival is especially dedicated to women directors who have made their mark to change the dynamics of Theatre with their creativity and ingenuity. Chandigarh Administration shall be privileged to acknowledge the talented women directors by providing them an opportunity to recognize their achievements through staging their theatre pieces directed by them.
Women theatre directors from National School of Drama, New Delhi shall also showcase their significant contributions in the world of theatre at Tagore Theatre during the festival.
On the opening day of the festival, theatre piece titled “Roop Aroop” (in Hindi) directed by Ms. Tripurari Sharma would be staged at 7 pm at Tagore Theatre. Ms. Tripurari is a playwright, translator and director of repute and has conducted theatre workshops in India and abroad. She has written and Directed plays like, Bahu, Birsa Munda, Aks paheli, Banjh Ghati Sazaa, kath ki Gadi, Lal Lal Hathi.
The play Episode in the Life of an Author (in Hindi) directed by Ms.Bharti Sharma will be staged on May 31 at 7 pm. Active in theatre. since 1982, ahe has acted in nearly 50 plays, working with eminent directors like Satyadev Dubey, Ratan Thiyam, Ram Gopal Bajaj, Mohan Maharishi, Fritz Bennewitz and Barry John; has performed at international Theatre Festivals in Tunisia, Algeria, Rome, Syria and Kuwait; She has acted, anchored, written produced and directed features, films documentaries.
On the concluding day June 1, Director Maya Krishna Rao’s play Quality Street (In English) will be staged. Maya Krishna Rao is a significant presence in contemporary Indian theatre, and is a well known for her one-woman shows. She acts, sings, dances, creates her own scripts, directs herself. Each show has a distinct language of theatre, ranging from dance theatre, to a rock concert. The uniqueness of Maya’s performances derives also from her training in Kathakali. In her creative work, this allows her to straddle comfortably the worlds of dance and theatre.
