Chandigarh: – A one day training workshop of project coordinators, ANMs, and social workers of field NGOs implementing Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Programme was inaugurated at Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Public Administration, Sector 26, Chandigarh this morning by Sh. Satish Chandra, IAS, Principal Secy. Health and Family Welfare, Punjab
The workshop was held under the auspices of Society for Service to Voluntary Agencies (N) – Punjab (SOSVA, for short), a Mother NGO. The main objectives of the RCH Programme are: –
To improve the health status of pregnant women and reduce maternal mortality.
To improve the health status of children up to 6 years age and reduce infant mortality.
To promote the use of family planning methods for spacing of children and reducing birth rate.
To improve the sex ratio by discouraging female foeticide.
To improve the health status of adolescent girls and their sensitization on RCH issues.
SOSVA implementing this programme in Punjab through 35 field NGOs. Each field NGO covers a population of 12,000 to 15,000 with some of the bigger NGOs covering population up to 20,000. The projects are located in different districts of the State and either cover rural areas or slums in cities.
The training programme focused on imparting knowledge to the field workers of these NGOs to improve their communication skills and provide them with latest information and concepts about safe motherhood, importance of breast feeding, child survival, education for adolescents on responsible parenthood, and gender sensitization.
Sh Satish Chandra, in his inaugural address reiterated Government’s commitment to improve the health status and general upliftment of women in the state. He lauded the role of the voluntary sector in general and SOSVA in particular in the progress made in this area in recent years. He also released IEC material prepared by SOSVA for distribution among beneficiaries.
