fine presentation by Bhaskar Colony Children under the direction of Zulfiqar from Theatre Age, and distribution of sweets and snacks formed part of Independence Day celebrations at Panjab University Campus here today. Prof. R.C. Sobti, Vice-Chancellor hoisted the national flag.
Recalling the supreme sacrifices of freedom fighters, Dr. R.C. Sobti, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University in his address emphasized the need to secure and fortify the hard earned freedom and for efforts to take the country to newer heights. We must take pride in our accomplishments and must not become complacent at any stage. “The need of the hour is to develop healthy team spirit, deep commitment and zest for profession to arrest and overcome
crises of our times”.
Listing the achievements, Dr. Sobti said that University can take pride in having overhauled the examination system where there were no Result Later Cases and timely declaration of results. There has been transparency in internal assessments and practical awards. The University is moving towards complete computerization in near future. “Consistency would be the key to become globally competitive and nationally distinctive.” The University
will soon have Indoor Shooting Range, astroturf for Lawn Tennis and plastic surface for hockey ground, he added.
Dr. Sobti announced amidst cheers that University had been able to convince the Ministry of Human Resource Development to write to the Ministry of Home Affairs to sanction Rs.367.4 crores for overall development of the University. The University is “moving in a big way to meet the societal challenges by introducing the National Policy of O.B.C. reservation from the starting of 2008 session. The rosy picture need not make us oblivious of the potential and prevalent hazards, he emphasized.
The Vice-Chancellor shared his sense of satisfaction in having initiated steps in making the University a no smoking zone, polythene and garbage free campus. The University had developed gardens which included Rose Garden, Trifla Garden, Palm Garden, Hibiscus and Bougainvillea Path. He complimented the University Ecological Society in raising the “green consciousness” of the residents. He also made a fervent plea to observe first Monday of every month as a no vehicle day at the Campus. He also complimented the students’ community for forming student body under the nomenclature “Sankalap” for undertaking cleanliness on the campus.
The Vice-Chancellor complimented the Chief Security Officer, Shri Vijay Pal Singh for his efforts in the presentation of vibrant pageant and Dr. Archana R. Singh for her artistic and wonderful compeering.
