CHANDIGARH: Inspector General of Police for the Union Territory of Chandigarh R.P. Uppadhaya, on Tuesday instituted an inquiry into the incident in which reporter of the Dainik Jagran newspaper, Mr Avinash Sharma was beaten up by a police commando identified as Deepak, near the site of fire incident in Sector 17 on Monday.
After meeting a delegation of about five dozen journalists led by the
Chandigarh Press Club President Nanki Hans and Secretary General,
Nalin Acharya, who appraised him of the resentment about the incident,
Mr Uppadhaya said that the probe had been marked to SP (city)
Parvinder Singh. Till the report was not submitted to him, the
commando would remain attached in the police lines on a
non-operational duty that did not have public interaction.
Mr Uppadhaya said that while Mr Parvinder Singh would inquire into the
complaint lodged by the Mr Avinash Sharma, the DSP (Crime) had been
handed over the case that was registered against the journalist. The
IGP said that the incident was unfortunate and he would personally
ensure that justice was done in the case. Based on the inquiry
reports, appropriate action would also be taken in the matter, he
assured the delegation.
